Glenmorangie 1997 Grand Vintage 750ml
The Glenmorangie Grand Vintage 1997 is a landmark expression—an exquisite single malt shaped by bold experimentation, rare wine cask finishing, and the visionary creativity of Dr Bill Lumsden. Vivid with red fruits, candied sweetness, and elegant complexity, this vintage stands as one of Glenmorangie’s most unique and kaleidoscopic creations.
Crafted from spirit distilled in 1997, only two years after Dr Bill began reshaping the distillery’s future, this whisky reflects a pivotal moment of transformation. From refining the spirit cut to exploring rare cask finishes, his innovations opened new dimensions of flavor—encapsulated beautifully in this extraordinary release.
A Rare Red Wine Cask Experiment
Initially aged in the finest bourbon casks, this whisky became the subject of one of Dr Bill’s rarest and most daring experiments. Nearly a decade into maturation, a select parcel was transferred into exceptionally scarce Château Montrose red wine casks from Saint-Estèphe, Bordeaux.
These casks—deeply stained by intensely hued wine—were so exclusive that only a handful could be sourced. Their influence brought sumptuous layers of soft red fruits, vibrant berry tones, and a candied richness unlike anything previously created at Glenmorangie.
After 13 additional years of slow maturation, the whisky had evolved astonishing depth and vivid character. Dr Bill then orchestrated a complex marriage of casks:
-
Bourbon cask malt → bright citrus and orchard fruit
-
Long-finished Oloroso sherry malt → sweet spice & nutty warmth
-
Rare “secret” casks → additional layers of richness and finesse
The result is a Vintage Malt of breathtaking harmony and expressive elegance.
